Die 12X-Kabel können Daten- und Steuerinformationen transportieren. Die SPCN-Kabel können nur Steuerinformationen
transportieren.

Die 12X-Kabel einer E/A-Erweiterungseinheit werden an ein Anschlusspaar von 12X-Kabeln auf der Systemeinheit
angeschlossen. Das 12X-Anschlusspaar befindet sich auf einer Plug-in-Karte in der Systemeinheit
oder wird direkt am Chassis der Systemeinheit angebracht. In beiden Fällen sind die Anschlüsse mit
einem E/A-Hub-Chip verdrahtet, der das 12X-Protokoll treibt. Die Plug-in-Karten werden als GX-Adapter
oder GX-Karten bezeichnet.
